The whole idea that music is a young man's game is an antiquated notion. I think that our jokey ideas about rock and roll (which i also cherish) have a comical character about an aging rocker who is sad and pathetic. But that is caricature.
I definitely don't get out to as many shows anymore...but when I do, I see pretty diverse audiences and people. I also see more older people continue to play music and I believe everybody thinks it's cool and what the hell, the Rolling Stones have a new album.
Actually, I'll take it one step further. Music is no longer for the young. It is for the old. Moms, pops, daddies, grammies, nanas, pepeps and all olds RULE THE NIGHT.
We have a band in Cleveland of old guys playing what they call "AARPunk". They're called Tufted Puffins, and they're one of my favorite bands to go see.
Love this. I am currently wearing a Breeders shirt but missed their show here in SF this week because I was worried I would be too tired for work the next day. Even though the show started at 7pm and was done by 9pm and full of a bunch of grey hairs (I know because my old guy boyfriend went and got me this shirt I am wearing). So yeah this resonated. Big fan of La Luz and Shannon and the Clams too!
Anyone out there making music that's not all "John Denver sounding," that droning shit from the late 60s to mid 70s, you've got my vote!
Music is about the sound, not what the band members look like, or their age. Hell, most of the popular bands throughout history have been full of weird looking dudes. Thy definitely weren't getting chicks as a spectator. But, because of their music, chicks were digging on them.
Making music is probably the best form of group expression out there.

Thank you! I too missed a weeknight Breeders show because it "started too late!"
Punk done this well, fucking brilliant. String screaming clean with a persistent thump! Go Wimps.
Punk mom is hilarious, and The Wimps' 'I'm a Mom' vid is top notch.
Thanks to Omar for digging up good stuff.
True musicians never give it up. 👍
Doja is fire!
Hellfire!!
100! Whatever "it" is, she's got it.
Keep rockin
Newer music is often soulless and boring.

Rock on!
You had me from, Abe Simpson’s immortal quote about used to being with ‘it’.
And I enjoyed the ride all the way through.
A great read.
I was a 12 year old at punk concerts, and while my tastes have changed I hope to be a 70 year old at punk concerts some day. Music is for everyone.
Just wanted to compliment the three A+ hyperlinks in the first paragraph.
Thanks for introducing me to wimps!
